We Are the Family of God
The fact is, La Familia De Dios is one in the eyes of the Father and Christ—and will be even more so in the future. It is God’s plan for His family to be a divine model and type of the human family.
1. We are God’s children
God is our Father, and we are His children. He cares about us and wants to spend eternity with us, even if we haven’t been adopted into His family by marriage or bloodline. This truth is an amazing comfort to those who come from broken families or have no family at all. It also makes sense of how we should treat each other and live together.
We’re told to be a “household of faith” (Ephesians 2:19), and that means living together in community like a family. We have to be kind and respectful to one another, support each other in tough times, and help each other out when we can. We also have to forgive each other. This is how we show that we are the family of God, and our relationship with God is close enough to call Him Abba Father.
But most importantly, we’re taught that only those who accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior are God’s children. This is because Jesus paid the price for our sins by dying on the cross. So only those who believe in Him and trust His finished work are washed clean by His blood, regenerated by the Spirit, and given the right to become children of God.
God’s adoption of all people who put their faith in Christ is the ultimate fulfillment of His promise to Abraham. The Bible also looks forward to a day when the whole world will be joined into His spiritual family by believing in Christ, and we will be part of God’s kingdom for all eternity. What an amazing promise! Let these child of God scriptures encourage you to rejoice in this truth and praise Him with all your heart, mind, and soul.
2. We are God’s children by faith
When you are saved, God adopts you into His family. The church is the adopted family of those who believe. The biological family is separate from the church. The church family is called “children of God.” In the Bible, only those who have faith in Jesus Christ are referred to as the children of God.
Those who are not the children of God have never placed their trust in Jesus alone for their salvation. To be a child of God, you must have believed in Jesus and His death and resurrection on your behalf. To believe in Him is to trust in Him, not your own good works or your own efforts to please God.
In Ephesians 1:13, Paul uses the image of adoption to teach about the sovereign purpose of God in salvation and the church. He says, "He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will." Adoption is a wonderful image for explaining how we became God’s children.
It means that God has chosen a people for Himself, not because of their own goodness or merit, but solely because of His own grace and love. He has redeemed them from the bondage of slavery to sin, giving them the full rights of sonship. Now they are indwelt by the Holy Spirit and can call out, "Abba, Father!"
This is how you know that you are a child of God: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). It is also how you know if you are in the church: “Those who continue in sin have not known him, who does not love his brother” (1 John 3:13).
3. We are God’s children by birth
Those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ are members of God’s family. The Bible describes this as a spiritual adoption. Christians become part of God’s family through the atoning work of Christ. The family of God is comprised of believers who have accepted His forgiveness and are reborn spiritually. It is a privilege to be part of the family of God. Being God’s child means we can cry out to Him as Abba Father, who listens to our requests and cares about us. It also means we can be confident that we are eternally safe and secure in Him.
The Bible uses the image of adoption to teach us about God’s plan for reconciliation. This image was used in the New Testament, especially in Paul’s writings, to illustrate that all those who place their faith in Jesus are spiritually adopted into God’s family. God’s purpose was to reconcile men, Jew and Gentile, slave and free, male and female into His family as sons.
As children, we are heirs of God’s kingdom, with all the spiritual rights and privileges He gives to His own sons and daughters (Galatians 3:28). In Romans 8:16, this includes our right to call upon Him as our Father and our right to receive the fullness of His blessings.
When Paul talks about our spiritual adoption, he uses the Greek word, huiosthesia. This word is used only to refer to the sonship of believers in this age of grace and it means to be placed as an adult son into a family. In other words, it means that once we are saved, we can never be un-saved. We are always God’s children, no matter our gender, race or nationality, no matter how well we live or how bad we sin.
4. We are God’s children by marriage
Whether you have children or not, if you have placed your faith in Christ, you are part of God’s family. Those who are not children of God, however, do not receive the benefits and blessings of that status. They do not have direct access to their Father in heaven, and they cannot receive salvation from sin and eternal life. They are the “enemies of God,” who have rejected Jesus’ death and resurrection for the forgiveness of their sins (Romans 8:29).
The Bible teaches that marriage is between one man and one woman. It is a union that comes directly from God’s design, not a result of social convention or religious tradition. Throughout the Bible, God’s order for marriage is affirmed and emphasized.
One of the most significant purposes of marriage is to produce children. This is a direct fulfillment of God’s command in Genesis to be fruitful and multiply (Gen. 1:28). It is a privilege to raise children, to love them unconditionally, to teach them about their loving Creator, and to show them how to depend on Him for all of their needs. It can be a difficult and exhausting privilege, but it is a beautiful one.
However, many couples are unable to have children for a variety of reasons. For these couples, the Scriptures still provide an identity in the church. They are the “flock of God.” The church is not just a building, but it is the body of believers who have placed their faith in Christ. The body of believers is made up of Jews and Gentiles, men and women, young and old, rich and poor, slave and free, but they are all united together in Christ, who is the cornerstone.
5. We are God’s children by death
The New Testament uses the term “children of God” to refer to those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ. While all people are God’s creation, they become members of His family only by accepting the gift of salvation through Him. When a person becomes a child of God, they are eternally secure in their position as His children.
When Adam and Eve rebelled against God in the Garden of Eden, they lost their right to perfect, eternal life on Earth. They also lost the ability to pass that right on to their offspring. This means that the only inheritance that they could pass on was sin and death.
Despite their fallen state, believers still bear the image of God and possess inherent dignity and value. In addition, the Bible teaches that God knows each and every human in the world before they are born (Genesis 1:27). God has a relationship with each of us, including the intimate details of our lives and our spiritual condition. He even knows whether or not we will accept His offer of salvation through Christ.
This means that all those who are children of God are also heirs to His spiritual kingdom, inheriting the spiritual rights and privileges and eternal life that He purchased with His own blood. It also means that we have direct access to our Father by placing our faith in Him. If you have not accepted Jesus as your Savior and Lord, you can do so today. By doing so, you will join the millions of other believers who are His children, resting in the fact that He is your Heavenly Father.
